Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) guide

Step 1: Before you start!

Please close all Office 365 applications on your PC, e.g. Outlook, Skype, Teams, etc, and ensure you are aware of your Apple ID credentials.

  • From a PC/laptop, go to https://aka.ms/MFASetup
  • You will need to login with your email address and network password
  • Select the appropriate Country and enter the mobile number of the phone you would like to use to authenticate MFA requests
    • Remove the 0 (zero) from the beginning of your mobile number
  • Select the Call me radio button and click Next
  • You will receive a call to your phone. Answer the call and follow the instructions which should ask you to press # hash on your keypad
  • If you encounter a problem click Back and try the process again
  • On the next two pop-ups, click Next and click Done

  • From the main page, select + Add method (above the phone symbol)
  • On the pop-up ensure Authenticator app is selected and click Add
  • You will now be requested to install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone
Note – If at any point you are logged out of the web portal, you will need to log in again and verify yourself by phone as per the previous step

  • From the same phone you used in Step 1, go to the App or Play Store and search and install the Microsoft Authenticator app
  • From your phone launch the Microsoft Authenticator app
  • Select Allow notifications
  • Select Skip until Add work account is shown
  • Select Add work account
  • Select OK to allow access to the Camera

  • From your PC/laptop, click Next until the QR code is displayed
  • Scan the QR code using your phone. Click Next
  • If there is an error on the pop-up, click Back and try this step again

  • From your PC/laptop, the Let's try it out pop-up will send an approval request to your phone
  • On your phone you should receive a push notification to approve the request. Select Approve
  • The PC/laptop pop-up will then display Notification approved. Click Next
  • If there is no approval request or there is an error on the pop-up, click Back and try this step again
  
  
  
  

Step 7

  
  
  • From your PC/laptop, the main page will now show you have set-up Microsoft Authenticator
  • Set-up is complete!
  
  
  
  

Recommendations

  
  
  • Select the + Add method link to and add an Alternate phone as an approval method, which can be the same mobile device or a landline This alternate phone can then be used as an MFA approval in case the Microsoft Authenticator app is not functioning
  • Check Default sign-in method at top of page, and ensure it is set to your preferred method. Recommendation is Microsoft Authenticator
  • To restart your PC if you are experiencing authentication issues with any of the Office 365 applications
